2006 – Sud Tirol: Pyramids on the plateau

Saturday July 22nd, 2006

We will spend the weekend in Sud Tirol. So we leave early in the morning by car and before lunch we are already in the area we want to visit. We go to Bolzano and over it, on the wide plateau where there are Collalbo and Longomoso. One of the first things we visit is Longomoso with its earth pillars. Earth pillars are vertical columns of earth with a stone at the top, created by erosion. I know there are others spots with earth pillars around the world, but they are always fascinating. And here I like the colours.

At Monte di Mezzo, a near village, there is the Maria Saal church. It was built in the 17th century. The popular pilgrimage church is decorated with ex votos. We stop then in Longostagno and Longomoso. In Soprabolzano there are other earth pillars, we walk around the area also here. A short break in Costalovara along the lake and we go back to our hotel in Soprabolzano.

Today we go to Castelrotto, it’s a nice town, and we always like to spend some time here. The church S. Pietro is very nice for the landscape around. I missed to see it other times, but it’s really worth. In the afternoon we stop in Fié allo Scilliar and visit “Castel Presule” a schloss. When we finish our visit, we drive back home. We are happy to have spent the weekend in Sud Tirol. It was a short trip, too few time, but we had great weather and the places were really good to see. I’m really impressed to see earth pillars, even if it wasn’t the first time. The first one was in Segonzano many many years ago.

You can read about my other trip to Krakow here.
