2017 – 2 days in Switzerland

We wanted to go in another part of Switzerland, but many mountain passes are closed till May, so we opted for a different itinerary (probably we will do also the other one in June).
So the idea was Martigny, Lausanne, Sion, underground lake and back from Simplon Pass.

Saturday April 29th, 2017

We left from home early in the morning by car, till Aosta by highway and to the  Grand St. Bernard tunnel. From there down in the valley till Martigny: we have booked our hotel here, but it’s still morning, so we decide not to stop and go on to St. Maurice where there is a beautiful abbey dating back to 15th century.
We enter the church but unluckily the museum and the cloister are closed.
So we proceed in direction of Lausanne, but we stop in Aigle where there is a beautiful castle surrounded by vineyards. We decide to have lunch here.

Then we arrive in Lausanne, we go immediately to Mount Pelerin,  and from there we can see a beautiful landscape over the lake and the mountains and more Switzerland. While we go back to the city, we see a fox crossing the road.
We park near the cathedral, we visit it, the surrounding streets, till Hotel de Ville and St. Francois. We move the car to go near the lake where we walk a bit on the lake front.
After Lausanne we drive back to Martigny and now we go to the hotel. We are 3 people (we booked a triple room) but they forgot to prepare the third bed, so they give us 2 rooms. Very nice.
We go out for dinner, we take some night pictures and back to sleep.

Sunday April 30th, 2017

We visit Martigny: the main square, the cathedral, , the Amphitheatre Romain, and we see in the distance the castle.
Next stop Sion: it’s still early in the morning (and it’s Sunday), there are few people around. We walk in the main pedestrian street, we see the 2 churches St. Theodule and the Cathedral (they are in the same square) and the near Tour des Sorcieres. We climb to the hill where there is the Basilique de Valere. The landscape up there is very nice. Inside the church there is a Mass, so we cannot fully visit it (just a part of it is reserved for the Mass, half of the church can be seen).

Then we head to Val d’Herens for the earth pyramids of Euseigne: the earth cones are 10 to 15 meters high and most of them have a rock on the top. The cones were created in the end phase of the last Ice Age. And then lunch.

In St. Leonard we go to see the underground lake: it’s a lake (around 300 mt long) inside a cave where they bring you on a boat. It takes around 30 minutes, but it’s worth.

Last stop of our trip is Sierre where we walk a bit in the pedestrian area, and to end the trip we go to Simplon Pass where we find snow and cold. We leave Switzerland and go back home.
