2018 – Patagonia: mountains and glaciers (part 3)

First trip of my life in South America, spending 2 wonderful weeks in Patagonia (Argentina and Chile). Many of my friends have already been to Patagonia, and many others when I say it: “Oh nice, I would love to go to Patagonia”, so it seems everybody likes it.

Sunday Januray 6th 2019

Today we leave Argentina for Chile. We will visit the Torres del Paine National Park. After the stop at the border, we reach Laguna Amarga and we enter the park. The mountains and the colours are very nice. We stop at the first waterfall, Cascada del Rio Paine, then we continue to Lake Pehoé.

Then we walk a bit to reach Mirador Cuernos, with nice views on the Cuernos del Paine. And then we see the Salto Grande waterfall. We go back to Laguna Amarga and then they take us to Hotel del Paine (I really didn’t like this place). The landscape is very nice but the hotel is in the middle of nowhere.

Today we have a free day, but from the hotel is almost impossible to go anywhere. We would like to go hiking to Torres del Paine, but the hotel doesn’t do the hiking today and it won’t be possible to reach Laguna Amarga in anyway. There aren’t taxi here.

So first we walk to Laguna Escondida, a small lake, not too far from the hotel. But we would like to see something more. So later we go to Mirador Serran where we have a 360° view over the valley, with its nice rivers. In the afternoon we are back to the hotel and relax there.

Another day stuck in this place. So first we go to Laguna Toro, stopping at Mirador Serrano for some pics, then we go back to the park and walk a bit there. After lunch back to the hotel, they will come to take us at 3pm to go back to El Calafate.

I don’t know why the return took so long (when we came here it was much faster). We arrive in El Calafate at late evening. I’m happy to be back in Argentina. I didn’t appreciate Chile.

Wednesday January 9th 2019

The last real day of the trip. The next ones will be just to return home. In the morning I walk around El Calafate, it’s a nice town, with many shops. And a lot of people. While I walk I ask to some agency about an half day excursion for the afternoon.

So after lunch I decide to go to Cerro Frias, they take you up an hill with a 4×4, and from there you have a wonderful view, from Torres del Paine to Fitz Roy and Lake Argentino. It’s a bit expensive but it’s a nice way to spend the last hours here.

Thursday January 10th 2019

It’s time to say goodbye to Patagonia. In the morning they come to take us to the airport. From here we fly to Buenos Aires (with a technical stop in Bariloche). In Buenos Aires I have to wait 5 hours at the airport, and in the evening I get the flight to Rome.

Friday January 11th 2019

In the afternoon we land in Rome, and in the evening I arrive at Milan (and from there home).
