Few days in Trentino, where I spent a lot of summer holidays when I was a children. The places are beautiful and it’s always nice to come back.
Saturday August 24th, 2019
We decided to spend this weekend in Trentino, in Moena, where we spent many summer vacations when I was a kid. We leave early by car and in the late morning we arrive in Moena and head straight to the hotel we booked (in a very central position). Even if it’s still early, our room is ready and we can leave our luggage and the car. We walk a little through the center, we see the parish church and the nearby church of S. Volfango.
After lunch I reach the Roncac hut (not far from the town center). There are many damages from the bad weather of the last November when many trees were knocked down. It was really bad for Trentino. After a brief stop we go to Val San Nicolò. We leave the car in the parking lot and walk towards the valley. The weather is cloudy, after a while it starts to rain. We stop at a shelter near the Crucifix chapel and then we decide to go back to the car. We have dinner at the hotel and walk a little around the center of the town.
Sunday August 25th, 2019
Today we return to Val San Nicolò, leave the car in the parking lot and this time we take the shuttle bus that takes us to the valley. We walk in the valley to the waterfall, take a short break at the nearby shelter. When we arrived there was the sun, now it is cloudy, so we decide to return to the beginning of the valley and have lunch at another shelter, to be close to the shuttle. We have lunch at the Ciampié hut and after lunch it starts to rain. At the shuttle stop the rain becomes very consistent, but fortunately we are sheltered.
Back in Moena, after a brief stop at the hotel, I reach the nearby town of Sorte, and from there I continue to the Malga Panna and a little further to the Malga Peniola (which I do not reach). Here too there are many fallen trees. Later we take the car and go up to the Fedaia Pass, cross the dam and take some photos of the lake and the Marmolada.
Instead of returning from the same road, we continue, we reach Malga Ciapela (where the Marmolada cableway departs) and we would like to continue in the underworlds of Sottoguda (a narrow valley with sheer cliffs). Unfortunately, again due to the bad weather, the road is closed, we are forced to make the road that passes over. From a bridge we can see the road in the valley was almost completely wiped out. It was really impossible to pass, even by foot. We continue passing by Alleghe (with the lake), Falcade and the S. Pellegrino pass. We go back to the hotel, have dinner and walk downtown.
Monday August 26th, 2019
After breakfast we go to the Costalunga pass. We take the chairlift that takes us to the Paolina refuge and from here we walk, slightly sloping up to the monument to Cristomannos (a giant iron eagle) and then flat up to the Roda di Vael refuge. The landscape is beautiful. The weather is not like we hoped for.
Despite the sun, forecasts give rain, so even today we decide to get closer to the chairlift. So after having rested a bit and taking lots of photos, we return to the Paolina refuge, where we have lunch. While we are here, it starts to rain. We wait for it to stop, then we go down with the chairlift to the Costalunga Pass and go to the nearby Carezza lake. There is very little water, what a pity. In the late afternoon we stop at Soraga, then we return to Moena.
Tuesday August 27th, 2019
After breakfast we reach the Pordoi pass. We find it difficult to find parking, there is a lot of people. We take the cable car and go up to Sass Pordoi. It’s beautiful, it looks like a lunar landscape. We walk a little on the big plateau. Most people go to the Piz Boé refuge, we decide not to go there and we just walk around the cable car.
In the late morning we take the cable car and stop at the pass for lunch. Before returning home, we stop in Cavalese, where we have an icecream and walk through the center. Time to say goodbye Trentino. In the evening we arrive at home.
