2007 – Autumn in Umbria and Tuscany

Short weekend in Umbria and Tuscany in September with my parents, in Cortona, Gubbio, Arezzo, San Sepolcro.

Saturday September 22nd, 2007

As usual, when I go somewhere wit my parents, we go by car, leaving early in the morning. Our first stop is Farneta (Tuscany) where there is an abbey. It was built in IX-X century. The apses are great features.

Farneta is not far from Cortona, so we reach it in a short time. The first thing is “Covento delle Celle”, founded by St. Francis. Inside you can see many rooms and the places where St. Francis lived. Then we proceed to Cortona, we walk in the pedestrian area, around the narrow streets. Later we go to Gubbio (Umbria). Many places of the city are known due to a tv series. It’s a wonderful city, and the Palazzo dei Consoli is great. We have been some times to Gubbio, but it’s always nice to come back here. Very nice city, and we have always good time at dinner. After dinner we walk a while around to take pics with the lights, especially the cathedral and Palazzo dei Consoli. We spend here the night (in an hotel we already knew).

Before leaving Gubbio, we stop at the roman theatre, not far from our hotel. Today we have to go back home, it will take some hours, so we won’t spend too much time for visiting the cities.

We stop in San Sepolcro and Anghiari, 2 small towns. The flat valley underneath the village was the set of the famous Battle of Anghiari in 1440, when Florentine troops won the battle against the army from Milano. In Arezzo we spend most of the time, especially around Piazza Grande and Santa Maria della Pieve. We get back to the car and drive home.
