2011 – Back to Rome after some years

4 days in Rome in hot August. There were less tourists than usual, so we could enjoy more the city and discover some new place.

Saturday August 6th, 2011

Usually we go to Rome by car, but this time, we find a good deal for the flight tickets, so we go there by plane.
After landing we take the bus that will take us to Stazione Termini, and from there by bus we reach the apartment we rented near Campo dei Fiori. We have a quick lunch and then we start exploring the city.
There are so many things to see in Rome, it’s always hard to choose where to start. So S. Andrea della Valle, Piazza Argentina (with roman ruins), S. Maria in Campitelli, Teatro Marcello, the synagogue, Isola Tiberina with the church of S. Bartolomeo.

We decide to go up to Gianicolo for the landscape, so after a short stop at S. Pietro in Montorio where there is a famous work of Bramante, and Fontana Paola, we reach the top. Then down again and to Castel S. Angelo (this time we don’t visit it inside), and around the main streets. We end up in Piazza Navona, where we decide to have dinner in one of the numerous restaurants. Later few pictures at Panteon and Fontana di Trevi (they are pretty near), and we end the first day going back to the apartment.

We get breakfast near our apartment. Today we go to S. Maria in Cosmedin where there is the “Bocca della Verità”, but first we see the other roman ruins in the area, like the “Tempio di Vesta”. Then we go up Aventino (another hill). We stop in many places to see some churches, till we reach S. Giovanni in Laterano.

Later we go to Colosseum, probably the most known spot in Rome, and of course, we spend some time to take a lot of pictures. We walk in the surroundings and take even more pics (especially to Arco di Costantino). Not far from there, other famous spots: Foro di Traiano, Foro Romano, S. Maria in Ara Coeli and Altare della Patria.

When we reach San Pietro, the queue is not so long (there are metal detectors before entering). It’s the right time to go inside. We still have a lot of time, so we move to S. Maria Maggiore (we are suffering a bit because it’s hot under the sun).

We continue to Quirinale and Montecitorio, Piazza di Spagna (with the famous ladder leading to Trinità dei Monti). Behind it, there is Pincio (another hill, and park) where finally we get some refresh. Then we go down and back to the apartment. After dinner, we take pictures at Altare della Patria, and Fori.

For the last day of our holiday we go to S. Maria degli Angeli and we visit the near Terme di Diocleziano. Here we get a combi ticket, so our next place is Palazzo Massimo (a museum).

Then we go up to the terrace of Altare della Patria and end our visit at Crypta Balbi (also this one was in the combi ticket). We take back our luggages, go to shuttle bus and we are back at the airport.
