2007 – Dresden: A weekend in July

A nice summer weekend (very hot weather) in Germany visiting many places (Dresden, Erfurt, Leipzig, Gera, Weimar).

Friday July 20th, 2007

As usually, we leave on Friday evening, but this time the flight is earlier, so we have the chance to use the last of sunny hours of the day. After renting the car in the airport, we immediately go to the hotel in Leipzig to leave our luggages. The hotel is near to the downtown, so we leave the car and we go on by foot.

In few minutes we reach the pedestrian area, passing through Nikolaikirche, before reaching the square we the ancient palace of the stocking exchange and Rathaus. From there, to the main square with the wonderful Rathaus. Then we go to Thomaskirche and we find a group of russian girls that are making a show with traditional dances and songs of their country. We go around the downtown and we reach Neues Rathaus. While we walk we note that there are blue tube around the whole city, but we don’t understand why they are there.

The sunset is already passed and so we go to dinner (in Nikolaiplatz – we eat well), and then we go back to the hotel.

Saturday July 21st, 2007

We wake up (as usually) early, so we walk in the downtown to see palaces lighted by the sun, and among the other buildings, we see Romanushaus. We take back the car and go to the surroundings to see Volkerschlachtdenkmal, a monument of the beginning of ‘900. It’s already hot.

From here we go to Dresden, and left the car, we start to visit this city. Also here it’s hot. We see the Opera, and we enter Zwinger, with its original shape and the fountains in the garden, then we see the schloss and we reach Kreuzkirche, with it’s strange inside. Before going back to the downtown, we reach the Rathaus and Frauenkirche. We’d like to see it inside, but the queue is long (and under the sun), so we leave it, and passing in front of the other side of the schloss with its long mosaic, we reach the terrace on Elba and Hofkirche.

After lunch we leave Dresden with destination Freiberg, nice town. It’s early in the afternoon, and no one is around. We see the two main churches and the castle. Next stop of our trip is Altenburg. another little nice town with the castle and the tower wich offer a nice sightseeing on the town. Next destination is Weimar, but first we stop in Gera to see the main square with Rathaus.

It’s quite evening when we reach Weimar but we decide to go on till Erfurt (and then we will come back to Weimar). In Erfurt, through Fischmarkt with Rathaus, we go to the hill, where there is Dom. It’s late, but with surprise the church is still open. To go back to the car, we pass in front of Predigerkirche and Barfussenkirche. By car we go back to Weimar.

We stop at more or less 10 kilometres from the city to the hotel (Comfort Hotel). It’s already after 10p.m. and we begin to be tired for the long day.

Sunday July 22nd, 2007

In the morning we visit Weimar, the castle, rathaus with its square, theaterplatz with the monument to Schiller and Goethe, Schiller’s house, Herderkirche and back to the caste.

The we go to Jena, but, perhaps the road is not the best one, we cross fields and towns and we have to go slow. We arrive late in Jena, so we look at the square from the car. Then we go to the airport and we refuel the car. We have lunch at McDonald’s and then it’s time (flight is at 14.00) to come back home.
