2012 – Budapest: Weekend at the Danube

Weekend in June at Budapest, the first time I visit the Parliament inside, and I failed to meet my friend, due to problems with mobile.

Friday June 22nd, 2012

We land on time in Budapest, and we go to the center. After leaving our suitcases at the hotel (the room is not yet ready, it’s only 11am), we begin to explore the city. We walk along the Danube, arriving at the cathedral Szent Istvan: we visit it inside. Then we decide to climb the tower (with elevator) from which we admire the view over the city, then we walk along Vaci utca up to the covered market. We return to the hotel, take the room and take a short break.

Then we go to Parliament to see if we can visit it. Today it’s not possible, but the next day, we can pick up the tickets and book a visit. We will be back. Left the Parliament, we reach the WestEnd shopping center, we stop for a snack. By foot we reach Andrassy Ut, at the bottom of which there is Heroes’ Square, the park with the lake and the castle.

It’s evening now , and we are quite far from our hotel. So we take the subway to go downtown, and look for a place to dine. We find a typical restuarant, not far from the Cathedral of St. Istvan. After dinner, as always, we walk a little to take photos at the enlighted city.

After breakfast we go straight to the Parliament to book tickets for the visit (afternoon), then we go to the funicular with which we climb the hill of Buda, starting from the palace, where there is a military parade, then the Templom Matyas (inside is being restored), the Fishermen’s Bastion and the National Archives.

We go down by foot and we stop for lunch. Then we walk to the center, in Vaci utca and back to Parliament for the visit at 4pm (guided tour in Italian).

Last thing we see is the Synagogue: only outside, it’s closed. After dinner, as usual, we walk around the city for pictures.

The flight is early, at 6.10, so we haven’t time for anything, we just go to the airport.
