2008 – Rhine: One day at the river

Another daily trip in the Rhine valley, spending it between Bacharach (where we go up the hill), Koblenz and Loreley.

Tuesday 5th August 2008

We arrive in perfect time, at 9.30 to Hahn. There we rent a car and we head towards Bingen. We make a mistake and we arrive on the Rhine in Oberwesel, much more north than expected, and then we change our itinerary.

From Oberwesel, we continue north through several villages very characteristic. We decide to stop in Boppard. We walk for the central streets, crowded with people.

Return to the car and we continue to arrive in Koblenz. We leave the car near the castle and begin to walk along the bank of the Rhine until Deutsches Eck, the point of the confluence between the Rhine and Moselle. The place is dominated by the imponent monument of imperator William. We climb it to admire the landscape from above.

Therefore we go to the center where we see St. Florin, the Liebfrauenkirche, Munplatz, Vier Turme, the square Am Plan. While we walk through the pedestrian streets, we have lunch. Back again, this time driving on the opposite bank of the Rhine up to Loreley, legendary point where many ships sank.

From the rocky spurs we can admire a long stretch of the Rhine. We did not want to run and do it calmly, deciding not to go up to Bingen. Near Kaub, we take the ferry (which passes near the Pfalzgrafenstein, castle that is located on an island in the middle of the river) and we arrive to Bacharach. Climb on foot to Werner Chapel, which stands out with the background of a blue sky without clouds, and continue until Burg Stahleck, castle, today hotel.

We return to the town, we walk a little before dinner (we have dinner soon to return at the airport in time), and soon after we leave the Rhine Valley in the direction of Hahn, where we arrive in good time. Shortly after we find ourselves on the plane, which brings us back home, concluding this beautiful day.
