2006 – Toscana: Siena and Montepulciano

Another trip during the weekend in Toscana (Montepulciano, Siena and some others) with my parents, visiting the typical beautiful towns around there.

Saturday May 20th, 2006

We reach Pienza and stop at Pieve di Corsignano. This little church dates back to VII century. Inside there isn’t much to see, but it’s nice anyway. We continue to Pienza (it’s pretty near to the Pieve) and we walk along the main pedestrian street, seeing the cathedral, the main square, the town hall and S. Francesco. Pienza is a beautiful, little town where the most of the buildings are very old. We finish our tour with S. Caterina.

We will stay in Montepulciano for the afternoon, but before going to the city center and to the hotel, we stop to see the church of S. Biagio. Then we go to the hotel (it is in a fantastic location, from here we move by foot all the time) and we walk around the town. In the late afternoon we go to Chianciano Terme (famous for the spa), we relax a bit, have an icecream and visit the city. Back to Montepulciano, we spend some time there, before and after dinner.

Today we stop in Montefollonico and Trequanda, before reaching the abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore. We visit it inside. Next stop is Siena, we have been here many times. So we start from S. Domenico, then the cathedral (it’s beautiful inside), Piazza del Campo with the well-known Palazzo Pubblico and its tower, Palazzo Piccolomini and back to S. Domenico.

We haven’t time to go up the tower of Palazzo Pubblico. I was there in the past, and it’s really beautiful, but Siena wasn’t the main destination of this trip. We finish with Fontebranda, then we go back home, where we arrive in late evening.
