2006 – A weekend along the Rhine

A beautiful weekend along the Rhine and Frankfurt. The time spent along the river was fantastic, we saw many great places and Cochem was a nice surprise.

I have been some times to Hahn. Ryanair considers it as Frankfurt airport (but it’s not so near), so this time we go to Frankfurt. We arrive there in the late morning and we start our visiti from the Dom and the near Romerberg (the main square). It’s cloudy and a bit windy.

We spend some time there and then we move to the Rhine. So we reach Bingen, the first town along the river in this trip. Here there is a castle and on the opposite site, we can see the Niederwalddenkmal. The monument was built to remember the birth of the German Empire. It’s 38 mt high. We drive along the river and when we see a castle, Burg Sooneck, we decide to go up. Unfortunately the guided tour will start too late, so we just see the main courtyard, from where there is a nice view over the Rhine.

Next stop is Bacharach where we walk along the main pedestrian street. It’s a small town with some timbered houses. We continue to Koblenz, where we arrive in the evening. The hotel is nice and we decide to have dinner there. We are a bit tired, we did and saw many things in just one day.

Today we visit Koblenz. It’s a beautiful sunny day. We go immediately to the Deutsches Eck, the spot where Mosel joins the Rhine, with the near Kaiser-Wilhelm-Denkmal (a monument) and St. Kastor (church). Then we walk around the city, without hurry, exploring the pedestrian streets and taking a break for lunch. In the afternoon we go up to the fortress, Festung Ehrenbreitstein.

The landscape is very nice. Deutsches Eck is in front of us, down. We go in the direction of the airport, and we stop in Cochem. Here there is a castle, we have time to visit it. I didn’t know the town/castle before coming here, but it was a pleasure to visit it. After the visit and an ice-cream, we go down to the town and then we go to the airport.
