2010 – Austria: Do we go?

Weekend in Austria by car.

Friday, November 26th, 2010

We go by car from Monza in the early morning. The forecasts say it will snow all weekend (in Italy). And in fact after a few miles it starts snowing. We have some doubts whether to continue to Austria or go back, but eventually we decide to continue. So we arrive in Salzburg (after lunch) at 2pm.

After leaving our bags at the hotel and the car, we start walking in the center. It doesn’t snow, but the sky is cloudy and and it’s cold. We pass the home of Mozart and since it is open, we visit it. When we go out, it’s already dark.

We reach the Residence where there is a Christmas market, and then cross the courtyards of the Residenz, where there are some cribs. We visit some churches, such as the Dom and the Franziskanerkirche, while St. Peter is closed. After dinner, back to the hotel.

Today it’s sunny. We start going through the courtyards and gardens of Mirabell, then cross the river and go to the Gstattengasse where many houses date back to 1400. We pass from St. Blasius and Hofmarstallschwemme, before arriving in St. Peter, this time it’s open. Then we go up to the fort, along the road instead of taking the cable car, so we can view landscape on the city.

We spend some time into the fortress, then while we go down we reach the monastery Nonnberg which is located nearby. After lunch, we leave the city to reach our next destination: Innsbruck. On the way we meet beautiful snowy landscapes.

We have the time to stop for a short time in Hall in Tirol. We walk along the main streets: the parish church, the Rathaus, up to the mint, the Stiftskirche and the Jesuitenkirche. Finally we come to Innsbruck and after a brief stay at the hotel, we go to Mass and then dinner.

We visit the city (it is Sunday morning, there are many people in the streets): Maria-Theresia-Strasse, with the churches Servitenkirche and Spitalkirche until Goldenes Dachl (the Golden Roof). We arrive at the Hofburg, and from there to the cathedral. Finally we walk to the other side of the river before returning the car. Crossed the border, we stop in Vipiteno and in Brixen, and in the evening we are back home.
