2010 – Brno and Vienna: Cold and hot

Some days in Slovakia, Czech Republic, Hungary and Austria, spending most of the time in Vienna where we met my friend Petra.

Upon landing in Bratislava (snow heavily), we rent a car and we head to Brno. Despite the snow, the streets are quite clean. Once in Brno, we lose a little time in searching for our hotel. We leave our bags and go to the center (although the hotel is not far away, we decide to use the car, since it continues to snow and it’s cold).

After reaching the main square, Namesti Svobody, we look for a place to eat. After lunch, we begin to explore the city (not snowing, but continues to be cold): the Radnice, the church Kostel Svate Mari Magdaleny, the square Zelny Trh (where there is a Christmas market) and Katedrala sv. Petra a Pavla, which stands at the top of a small hill.

After visiting the church, we return to the car and we stop at a nearby shopping center. After dinner, back downtown, we pass again by Kostel sv. Tomase, by Radnice and Namesti Svobody.

Today the sun shines. We go straight to the hill and visit the famous fortress Spilberk. We return downtown and walk the path of the previous day to take some photos with the sun.

Our next destination is Vienna. We stop for lunch at Dolni Dunajovice, and in a short distance to Mikulov, a town unknown to us, but very nice, dominated by a fortress.

In the evening we arrive in Vienna. By subway we arrive in Stephansplatz, walk along the Graben, and through the Hofburg we reach the Rathaus (where there is a market) and we meet our friend Petra. After a pleasant evening, back to the hotel.

The day is not the best, fog and cold, but we decided the night before to go all together to Melk.

Arrived at the abbey of Melk, we have to wait a few minutes for the guided tour (thankfully in English). After the visit, we return to Vienna, stopping for lunch in Krems.

In the afternoon we walk a little in the center and we meet another friend of ours, Carmen, but only for a short time. After dinner, back to the hotel.

Firstly, today we visit Albertina (there is an exhibition on Leonard). The show is really nice, and we spend the whole morning to admire it.

For lunch we go to Grinzing, although it is not the best season. Returning to Vienna we stop also to the abbey of Klosterneuburg. We spend the afternoon to visit the Leopold Museum. It’s our last day in Vienna, after dinner we meet again Petra that takes us to a rooftop bar.

Before returning to Bratislava, we make a detour and go to Gyor in Hungary, where we spend a few hours.

The temperature is pleasant (+14°, unlike the -17° on Saturday). A short distance away there is also the abbey of Pannonhalma. In the evening we are in Bratislava.

Today we have no time. After breakfast, we go to the airport, return the car and go home. It was a really nice trip.
