2010 – Morteratsch

Daily trip to Morteratsch.

Saturday January 23d, 2010

Today I go with my friends Mauro, Francesco and my sister in Val Morteratsch (not far from St. Moritz). We leave quite early, we pass by the Maloja pass (where the thermometer marks a not very welcoming -28°). We park a little later, at the beginning of the valley. It’s cold, but in a few minutes the sun’s rays illuminate and warm us. The walk is very pleasant, on the flat, on the sides of the cross-country track. The snow is beaten, so it is comfortable to walk.

At the bottom of the valley there is the most beautiful part. At the foot of the Bernina glacier an ice cave opens (the conditions change every year), in which you can enter. It’s beautiful, smooth and shiny ice creates a particular light. Unforgettable. We eat nearby. In the afternoon we decide to go back from the path on the other side of the valley. The snow is quite soft, we must wear snowshoes so as not to sink. When we are almost at the car, the mountains hide the sun (it is winter, the days are short) and we feel the cold. Before returning home, we make a brief stop at the Bernina Pass. Here too we walk in the snow, and in the evening we are at home.

It was a really nice day, especially for the ice cave at the end of the valley. The landscape was stunning and we got a beutiful sunny day.
