2013 – Ravenna, Fano and caves

Short weekend to Ravenna, Faenza and other cities in Emilia Romagna, with a wonderful visit to Frasassi caves and Furlo Gorge.

Friday June 7th, 2013

After arriving in Faenza, we walk through some pedestrian streets surrounded by ancient buildings, passing through S. Stefano Vetere and corso Mazzini until reaching Piazza del Popolo with the Cathedral of S. Pietro, the Monumental Fountain, the City Hall and the Clock Tower.

Then we visit the churches of S. Maria dell’Angelo, S. Rocco, S. Maria Vecchia and arrive at the Loggia degli Infantini. We continue to S. Francesco and S. Ippolito e Lorenzo.
We go back to the car and reach Ravenna.

After leaving the suitcases at the hotel, we go straight to the Teodorico Mausoleum, then go to the historic center: S. Giovanni Evangelista with inside some mosaics.

So the visit continues with Teatro Alighieri, Piazza Garibaldi, the former convent of S. Francesco, Dante’s tomb, S. Francesco, the Palace of the Province, Duomo and the nearby Battistero Neoniano with its beautiful mosaics.

We continue to visit the city with S. Giovanni e Paolo, S. Eufemia and reach S. Vitale complex (richly decorated by mosaics) and the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia.
We continue our visit with S. Maria Maggiore, S. Domenico, Piazza del Popolo, S. Giovanni Battista, the Baptistery of the Arians (also with beautiful mosaics), S. Apollinare Nuova and Teodorico Palace.

By car we go to S. Apollinare in Classe and Marina di Ravenna. After dinner, we take a short tour to see the lit city

Saturday June 8th, 2013

We start with the visit to the town of Gradara and its fortress, then we continue to Fano and see the Malatestian Tombs, S. Maria Nuova, Loggia S. Michele and the Arch of Augustus.

Then we go back and see the cathedral, S. Domenico, S. Elena’s Tower, Montevecchio Palace, the Malatestian Court and Palazzo del Podestà. Finally we see the Malatestian Castle, then we go to the beach.
Later we cross the Furlo Gorge, and we stop at the church of S. Vincenzo al Furlo. Then we visit the monastery of Fonte Avellana. In the evening we reach Fabriano (where we will sleep) but we still have time for a visit to the city.

So we see S. Filippo, Duomo S. Venanzo, Madonna del Buon Gesù, the City Hall, S. Benedetto with its cloister, Oratory of the Gonfalone, S. Domenico, the Palace of the Podestà and Fontana Sturinalto.
We also see Portico dei Vasari, San Nicolò, Santa Caterina and Sant’Onofrio.

Sunday June 9th, 2013

We continue visiting Fabriano, seeing some other churches and then we go to Matelica where we visit: S. Maria Assunta, Piazza Mattei, S. Francesco, S. Agostino and S. Maria Maddalena.

Then we go to Frasassi where we visit the beautiful caves. Since we are there, within a short distance, in San Vittore Terme we see the Abbey of S. Vittore alle Chiuse, the Medieval Tower and the Roman Bridge. Finally we end our trip by taking the car and coming home in the evening.
