2007 – We always go back to Rome

Thursday March 15th, 2007

We take the Eurostar in the late afternoon (at 6pm) to reach Rome. The train is late, but time passes nicely talking with a girl who is studying in Milan and is returning home at Rome for the weekend. Being late enough, we will do a brief tour of downtown and we pause for a while on the stairway in Piazza di Spagna.

This is not the first time that we go to Rome (the last time less than a year ago), so we see a few things already seen.

We go to Ostia to see the ancient Roman ruins. The archaeological zone covers a very wide area and it takes the whole day to visit (at the end we run a little, it comes the closing time). In the archaeological sites I take more than 400 photos. Back to Rome and we stop to visit St. Paul outside the Cathedral. Then back to downtown.

We continue to visit the archaeological areas and we go to the Roman Forum. From here we reach Piazza del Campidoglio, S. Maria in Ara Coeli and Altare della Patria.

Then to St. Peter, it is almost time for lunch, there is a bit of row, and so we wait patiently in queue. We visit the tombs of the popes, we climb up on the dome from where we admire the wonderful sightseeing on the city and finally the inside of the church. At short distance Castel S. Angelo rises and so we decide to Visit the fortress.

At the end of the visit, we reach the summit from where we admire the sunset on Rome. Finally we go to dinner with Nicoletta and Pio, our friends in Rome.

Sunday March 18th, 2007

It is the last day, we see the inside of the Coliseum (we have some difficulties to enter, it is the day of the marathon in Rome) and climb on the Palatine.

We have lunch near Fontana di Trevi and before returning home we find the time to go to Piazza di Spagna, where we take the subway to return to the station.
