2014 – France: Normandy

A week in France, around Normandy, renting a car and visiting many small towns. Some of the best place: Mont St. Michel, Rouen, Chartres.

Tuesday July 29th, 2014

The flight is early in the morning. We land in Beauvais and take the care we rented. From the airport we go to Chartres. We park near St. André and then we go around by walk. We visit it. Inside there are a lot of scupltures around the altar and an astronomical clock. Later we walk around the city center, passing by many timbered, old houses. Next stop is Le Mans. Here we visit Notre-Dame-de-la-Couture, St. Julien and see many old buildings like the Maison du Pilier Rouge and the Maison d’Adam et Eve.

It’s a beautiful sunny day, we start visiting the Abbaye de l’Epau (in the suburbs of Le Mans). We continue to Vitré, with its narrow streets of timbered-houses, the cathedral and the castle. Now we will see some beaches and sea towns. First one is Treguier with the church of St. Tugdual, then Perros-Guirec, Ploumanac’h and we stop in Lannion for the night.

Thursday July 31st, 2014

Today we continue along the coast, so Trebeurden, Cap Frehel where we walk around the lighthouse. We reach Fort la Latte. From the top of the tower, the landscape is very nice. Continuing our trip, we encounter Saint-Cast-le-Guildo, Saint-Lunaire (with a nice beach), Dinard and at a short distance Saint-Malo. We walk around the walls, with beautiful views on the sea, and in the city center.

And finally today we reach Le Mont-Saint-Michel. I was here many years ago, when I was still a child and had beautiful memories about this place. Many things changed since then, but I still enjoy it. The town and the surrounding laguna are very nice. In this part of France there are many military cemetery and beaches of the landing in Normandy: Chouain (cemetery), Omaha Beach, Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer (cemetery). Omaha beach is maybe the most famous spot. On the beach there is a monument commemorating the facts. In Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer there are almost 10.000 graves. We stop in Caen for the night and in the evening we visit a bit the city.

Saturday August 2nd, 2014

In the morning we continue to visit Caen, there are many spots. Vieux St. Etienne, St. Etienne, Abbaye aux Hommes, Palais Ducal, Vieux St. Sauveur and the Chateau. Then St. Pierre, Abbaye aux Dames and Hotel Dieu. By car we reach Honfleur, with its famous harbour. It’s very nice to walk around the town, but we stop for a while, because it’s raining. In Etretat we walk on the beach along the sea near the stacks (but we don’t go up to the top). We proceed to Fecamp (again some walk near the sea) and to Dieppe. We visit the city, have dinner and go to the hotel.

Sunday August 3rd, 2014

We spend some more time in Dieppe. Near there is another military cemetery. In the late morning we arrive in Rouen, where we will spend the rest of the day. Here there are many churches. We see Notre-Dame, the Gros Horloge, the Palais de Justice, Aitre St. Maclou, St. Maclou, St. Vivien, St. Ouen and the Hotel de Ville.
Inside the cathedral there is a painting that is almost the same of one my parents have at home. In the evening, after dinner, we see a light and sound event on the facade of the cathedral.

Monday August 4th, 2014

After a short walk in the morning, we continue our trip in Northern France, we stop in Martainville to visit a castle and its gardens and then we arrive in Beauvais. We see St. Pierre and walk a bit around, then we go to the airport. The behaviour of the staff at the airport was very rude.
