2004 – Athens: On Zeus’ tracks

Wednesday, March 17th, 2004

We take off in the evening, we arrive at about 11pm and we look around Athens in search of our hotel. It’s hard, no one knows it but the people are very helpful and help us in the best way. Then we reach the hotel and leave our bags. We head in search of a place still open (it is now nearly one o’clock in the night) for dinner. With a little surprise we find that most places are still open and no sign of closing.

We have dinner in a typical restaurant where they’re playing local music. Since it is rather late now, we go to sleep, waiting the next day for visiting the city.

We find we are close enough to the sights, we can move easily on foot, in a few occasions in the metro. Our first goal is the Agora: perhaps it is not known as the Acropolis, but surely it’s worth stopping for a visit.

And less crowded than the Acropolis, but there is still a large number of monuments and it’s situated in a green area. Perhaps for the fact it’s the Olympic year, there are numerous working sites on the Acropolis, the Agora is in better conditions. After the Agora, we visit the Acropolis overlooking the Agora (it takes a few minutes to go). Honestly I was expecting something more, but it is very nice. We take advantage to see the museum of the Acropolis.

We walk a little in the streets and admire (only externally, it’s closed for renovation), the Kerameikos. Then we move a little and reach the Roman Agora with the Library of Adrian and the tower of the winds.

Later, in the evening we decide to go to see the Piraeus. It’s not really close, but very efficient metro network allows us to reach it easily. There is plenty of life in the evening, and then return for dinner in a square near the Agora.
