2009 – Nantes: Crepes

Weekend discovering Nantes and the surrounding areas, with a nice trip to Noirmoutier and to St. Nazaire with his submarine base.

In the evening we reach the airport of Nantes where we rent a car. We take a brief tour of the city, we see the palace of the dukes of Burgundy and we walk in the pedestrian streets.

There is now a bit of fog that gives a particular light to the city. We reach the Place du Commerce and cross the Passage Pommeraye to reach the Graslin Theatre. We go back to the center through the Place Royale, St. Nicolas, St. Croix and the Hotel de Ville.

We enter St. Pierre where they are celebrating the mass. From Place St. Pierre, St. Pierre Course leads to the Castle of the Dukes of Burgundy, inside which there are so many people. Le Lieu Unique is the famous biscuit factory, but now is closed. We cross the Canal St. Felix and rent a car.

With the car we go to St. Nazaire with its Escal Atlantic, the place where the submarines were built. After lunch at a downtown restaurant pretty crowded, we go to the nearby Ile de Noirmoutier using the bridge. We visit Noirmoutier en l’ile, the main town of the island.

To return we would like to use the road instead of the bridge, but the high tide prevents us and we are therefore forced to use the bridge again. In the evening we are back and we have dinner with a typical pancake.

In the morning there is fog. We decide however to see some of the many castles built along the two rivers running through the city. We go north for a few miles looking for castles indicated on our map, but all of them are private property surrounded by parks and we cannot see anything.

In Nantes we stop to the Ile de Versailles, an island with buildings and gardens in the Japanese style. Back to the center of Nantes, now there is the sun. In the afternoon we reach a small suburb of Nantes inhabited by fishermen. After this brief visit we head to the airport and we conclude our journey.
