2013 – Alto Adige: The bell tower in the lake

Really short trip in Alto Adige (just 2 days) visiting Glorenza, Malles, Merano, and the wonderful Lago Resia, with the tower bell emerging from the water.

Sunday December 8th, 2013

We go by car pretty early and we stop in Sluderno to see Castel Coira. The castle is closed, but you can turn around. Then we go to Lake Resia before stopping at Glorenza: walk through the walls, through the central streets, looking at the Christmas market stalls. We exit the opposite side to see the church of S. Pancrazio then continue by car to Burgusio military monastery. We reach the first lake, the Muta lake, mostly iced.

We arrive at Lake Resia, from where the bell tower emerges in the middle of the water: here the lake is partly icy. In the afternoon we visit the Marienberg Abbey (when we arrive it is already completely in the shade). Inside there is also an exhibition of cribs. Before going to Merano to our hotel, we stop at Malles with the churches of S. Benedetto, S. Martino and S. Maria Assunta. In the evening we walk through the center of Merano, see the markets, walk through the arcades to the Duomo and enjoy it.

In the morning we continue our visit to Merano, going to Castello Principesco and then to Duomo. Then we cross the two banks of the Passirio with the summer walk and the winter walk. We take the car and climb up to Scena where we can admire the panorama of the valley from the Mausoleum of Archduke John.

We visit the parish church and then look at the castle from outside. In Tirol we look for the castle, but we do not find it and we end up by chance at Johanneum. In the afternoon we take a short stroll to Terlano and then to Trento where we visit the old town with S. Vigilio Cathedral, Piazza Duomo with its many palaces and look at some market stalls before returning home.
It was really short trip, but Alto Adige is always a wonderful place to visit.
