2013 – My first time in Malta

4 days in Malta exploring beautiful places and a lot of megalithic temples, included the Ħal-Saflieni Hypogeum, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Malta (together with megalithic temples and La Valletta).

Just landed, we take the car and go to Mqabba. We look for a place to eat but we don’t find anything. However the town is nice. We decide to continue to Hagar Qim to visit the temples. Before the visit we stop at the visitor center and eat something. Hagar Qim and the nearby Mnajdra are 2 megalithic temples on the sea.

The view is very beautiful, the temples are currently covered by 2 structures with tents (similar to those used for tennis courts), which protect the temples and likewise leave them outdoors to admire the panorama.
Before going to the hotel, we decide to go to Dingli to admire the cliffs and St. Magdalen’s Chapel. For dinner we decide to go to Mdina and take advantage of it to take photos of the city already illuminated. We enter the St. Paul’s Cathedral which is still open. Then we go back to Mellieha where our hotel is along the coast.

Today we visit La Valletta. We walk the main street, passing the churches of St. Barbara and St. Francis and reach the St George’s Square and St. John’s Co-Cathedral. We continue in the pedestrian streets, we pass by St. Dominic’s Church, and arrive at Fort St. Elmo.
We return to St. John’s Co-Cathedral to visit it inside: it is richly decorated, and inside there are also paintings by Caravaggio.

We continue to visit St. Paul’s Anglican Cathedral and head back to the Auberge de Castille, Auberge de Italie and St. Catherine of Italy. In the afternoon we return to Mdina, this time to visit the city with the sun, walk through the pedestrian streets, and then visit the nearby Rabat with St. Paul’s Church. We go back to the hotel and turn a little by foot in Mellieha. In the evening we go to La Valletta for dinner and some photos.

We go to Tarxien to visit the neolithic temples and then go to the Hypogeum of Hal Saflieni (we had booked the visit before leaving). In the afternoon we go to Gozo and immediately go to the Azure Window, an impressive rock arch at the seaside. We visit the city of Rabat (still in Gozo), which with the sunset acquires beautiful colors. Before returning to the ferry, we visit St. George’s Basilica. We eat in St. Julian’s, and walk a little on the waterfront.

We go to Qawra, and at the sea some people are bathing. We continue to Kalkara with its marina and Il-Birgu with Fort St. Angelo. It’s time to leave Malta, so we return to the airport and, with some trouble to fuel, we return the car.
