2014 – Germany and Switzerland for Christmas

It’s a while we don’t go to Switzerland. So for this year we decide to go back there for the Christmas markets (I used to go often to Switzerland when I was younger).

Saturday December 6th, 2014

We leave in the morning by car in the direction of Lindau. We take a short break in Vaduz. Reached Lindau, we leave the car and walk across the bridge. We visit the old town, passing St. Stephan, the Munster and reach the Maximilianstrasse, where we have lunch. Then we continue towards the Rathaus and the lake, where there are some Christmas markets. Upon reaching the Peterskirche, we return to the car and go to our hotel in Bregenz.

We begin the visit by walking through the center, then we climb to the upper part of the city, Oberstadt, dominated by Martinsturm. In the Kornmarktstrasse there are stalls of the Christmas markets, then we continue to reach the Nepomukkapelle, the Herz-Jesu-Kirche, and the Pfarrkirche St. Gallus. We go back to Lindau for dinner. As soon as we arrive, we find some girls who offer us a candle to light in nearby Munster where a group of boys and girls are singing. After dinner, we take a few photos at night, then we go back to the hotel.

We stop in St. Gallen, along the Spisergasse with the wealthy houses, to reach the Furstabtei St. Gallen. We visit some churches and then continue our journey to Constance, where we take the ferry to Meersburg. The upper part of the village is full of timber-framed houses and there are also 2 castles.

We cross the lake and begin our visit to Constance. We have a problem finding parking, so we try not to move the car for the whole afternoon. There are many market stalls and in St. Stephan’s church we stop to listen to a concert. In front of the Munster and the Rheintorturm we take numerous pictures.

Today we go to Reichenau, an island on which stands an ancient abbey. Unfortunately we can only visit the church. There is also the church of St. Georg, richly frescoed. We continue our journey to Schaffhausen to admire the famous waterfalls, then we also visit the historic center.

In the afternoon we pass the border and enter Switzerland. Here we stop in Zurich and go straight to the Grossmunster, St. Peter, in the central streets and finally to the station to see the largest indoor Christmas market in Europe. Later, in the evening we reach Lucerne. It is already dark when we arrive in the center and we immediately start taking pictures at the covered bridge, the Kapellbrucke and we walk through the center.

Tuesday December 9th, 2014

We continue to visit Lucerne, under a light snowfall: the Hofkirche St. Leodegar, the Museggmauer, the Jesuitenkirche, the Rathaus, the Matthauskirche, St. Peter, and again the Kapellbrucke. After the visit we take the car and in the late afternoon we arrive at home.
