2015 – Siena and surroundings

Weekend in Siena and San Gimignano. In March the weather  was pretty good so we had a really nice time there with some new friends.

Saturday March 21st, 2015

This time we choose to use the car as a mean of transport. Our first destination is San Gimignano, a small medieval town that still retains many towers. We reach Piazza della Cisterna and the nearby Piazza del Duomo, where we decide to climb the Torre Grossa from which we admire the panorama of the city and surrounding hills.

Going from San Gimignano in the direction of Siena, we decide to stop in Monteriggioni (a short distance from Siena), another city still surrounded by walls. After the visit to the city, we reach Siena and leave the car and the baggage at the hotel. We walk to the center and reach the Duomo and S. Maria della Scala. The day is over, but before going to sleep, we take some night photos of the illuminated monuments, especially in Piazza del Campo with the Torre del Mangia.

We go back to Piazza del Duomo and from there we go to Piazza del Campo to climb the Torre del Mangia. It’s still a bit early, we expect it to open, but being among the first people, we find no one on the stairs (rather narrow). After admiring the panorama from above, we walk a little to the central streets, then head to S. Francesco and S. Domenico.

Returning to the hotel we stop to see the monastery of S. Chiara. We leave Siena, we stop again in San Gimignano where we eat an ice-cream. To get home we decide to take an alternative road and at the sunset we stop at Montemarcello, near La Spezia, where we admire the sun sets over the gulf. We stop for dinner, and late at night we are back home.
