2015 – Umbria: Norcia and Gubbio

It was nice to visit Norcia and it’s a pity the city and the surrounding area were heavily damaged by the earthquake few months later.

This time we go by car. We leave early in the morning and go directly to Gubbio. We start walking around the center from Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo. Then we reach S. Giovanni and Piazza Grande with the Palazzo dei Consoli. We go up to the Duomo and Palazzo Ducale, then get to S. Maria Nuova and S. Francesco.

We continue our journey to Nocera, stopping to see the Duomo and S. Francesco. In the evening we arrive in Spoleto, where we walk a bit for the central streets: the cathedral, the Tower Bridge, the Arch of Druso, and the Roman Theater.

First of all we go to the Albornoziana Fortress: we only see it outside, turning around. Then coming down from the Bridge of Towers and returning to the Cathedral of S. Maria Assunta and the nearby S. Eufemia.

Our next destination is Cascia: leaving the car in the lower part of the city, we walk up to S. Maria della Visitazione and S. Francesco and then to S. Rita da Cascia.

We head to Norcia (where we booked the hotel). Our hotel is within easy reach of the main square where you can find the Palazzo Comunale, the Basilica S. Benedetto, La Castellina and the Cathedral of Santa Maria Argentea. We also see the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Sorrows, the Palace of Knights of Malta, St. Lawrence and the Roman Gate.

Since it’s still early we go to Campi Vecchio, a village perched on a hill at a short distance. Then we return to Norcia and after dinner we take the tour of the illuminated town.

Sunday November 15th, 2015

We stop again in Spoleto to see 2 churches: S. Paolo inter Vineas and S. Pietro. We continue to Trevi, the last stop of our trip: the center is quite crowded, we see the Clitunno Theater, the Municipal Palace, the Piazza della Rocca, the S. Emiliano Cathedral, the Medieval House, S. Francesco and Villa Fabri. After lunch we go home.
