2016 – Germany: Dresden, Leipzig, Sanssouci

4 days in Germany, between Sanssouci, Dresden, Leipzig, and riding along the Elbe for some relax till Pillnizt. Wonderful parks and nice weather.

Tuesday May 31st, 2016

As soon as we land and rent the car we go to Postdam to visit the Sanssouci palace. We start by visiting the park, then visit the palace inside (the rooms are not many). After the visit, we continue to the park, where other palaces are: the Orangerie, the Neues Palais, the Charlottenhof Schloss, the Chinese pavilion. We spend a good part of the day here. Then we reach Wittenberg, famous for Martin Luther. Here we walk around the center: in the square there is a statue of Martin Luther in front of the town hall and the church of St. Mary.

At the bottom of the street Luthergedenkstatten. On the opposite side there is the castle and the Schlosskirche, where Martin Luther had put his thesis. The sky is getting dark, the thunders rumble, but we get to the car before the storm starts. In the evening we arrive in Leipzig, we begin to see a bit the center: the town hall square, the old stock exchange, St. Thomas.

We visit the center again to see the things we just passed quickly. Before leaving the city we stop at the Volkerschlachtdenkmal. We continue our journey, next destination: Halle. Here we see the Neue Residenz, the Dom, the Markt, the Rathaus.

Then we head to Meissen, where we visit both the high part with the Schloss and the Dom (it’s about to close, but we just get in time to get in and take some photos), and the lower part with the Markt. In the evening we arrive in Dresden: we start going to the center without a precise destination. After dinner we take some photos, but it starts to rain heavily, we wait under the arcades that stops a bit before returning to the hotel.

First of all, we see the Zwinger, a rococo style building, the Opera, the Hofkirche, and walk along the terrace on the Elbe, with its many palaces and Frauenkirche.

This church was destroyed during World War II, and rebuilt piece by piece and reopened to the public only a few years ago. We cross the Stallhof and enter the Residenzschloss, where we climb up on the Hausmannsturm. In the afternoon we rent bikes from our hotel and go to Pillnitz along the cycle path along the Elbe.

We see the Schlosspark and in the evening we return to Dresden. Tonight the weather is nice, and we can take photos of the city without problems.

Friday June 3rd, 2016

We see the Hauptstrasse area, the Japanese palace and the dairy Pfund. We stop at Moritzburg to visit the castle and its park, then to Bautzen. I did not know this town, but it was a pleasant discovery. The center is fairly small with its towers, the Hauptmarkt, the Dom and the Ortenburg.

We go towards the airport, it’s a bit early so we stop at Konigs Wusterhausen, where there is a castle. The castle is being renovated and there is not much to see in the town. We eat something and we go to the airport.
