2008 – Vienna: Another time

Thursday October 30th, 2008

We leave in the evening and we arrive in Vienna on time. We take the underground and quickly we reach the apartment where the daughter of the owners expect us to deliver the keys. The apartment is near the Prater, but nevertheless we decide to go downtown by foot. We walk down the pedestrian Graben, past the Hofburg and the ring to arrive in the area where Rathaus is and we have dinner.

Then, by foot, we return to the apartment.

It’s a beautiful sunny day. We go to Schonbrunn. After visiting the palace, we walk in the gardens, and play with the squirrels and the maze. Time passes quickly, unfortunately.

Returned to the center, we pass by Franziskanerkirche to reach the dome. It’s almost the sunset and we go up the long staircase of the tower. The landscape, at this hour, rewards us for the hard work done to climb on top. We go then to visit the cathedral.

We are within walking distance from Peterskirche, inside, illuminated, it has a special charm. After dinner, we walk with no destination: HoherMarkt, Ruprechtskirche, Maria am Gestade, Kirche Am Hof (still open). And then in the area of the clubs where there is a lot of people in costume.

Saturday November 1st, 2008

Today it’s cloudy. We see the Graben and the Peterskirche also with the daylight, then we go to Hofburg and we decide to make the visit in the hope that the weather gets better.

When we leave it’s still cloudy, we see the Minoritenkirche (it’s not far from Hofburg), then we cross the Volksgarten, to Hofburg (this time we see the opposite side), the Albertina, and we meet with our friend in Vienna in front of the cathedral. Later we have lunch with her and we spend some time in her company (it’s always nice again).

We leave her near the Votivkirche (soon I will return to Vienna to meet her). Then we see the ring, past the Rathaus and Burgtheater, to reach the museum quartier. Also this day is almost over, we arrive at the Secession and near Karlskirche. Inside we admire the beautiful frescoes (unfortunately, the structure built to go up to the dome ruins the overall view of the church).

Then we go to dinner to Grinzing.

Sunday November 2nd, 2008

A brief stopover at Ruprechtskirche (closed) and then we visit the Klosterneuburg abbey.

Back in Vienna, we stop at the Belvedere. Then we go in the area of Dominikanerkirche with Jesuitenkirche and the Akademie der Wissenschaften.

Monday November 3rd, 2008

We start the day from Freyung and the near Schottenkirche, then the Holocaust memorial, and the Michaelerkirche Kaisergruft with the imperial tombs.

Then we go in the greenhouse of Hofburg to see the butterflies. We still want to see one more thing: the Prater. Wrong bus and we arrive in the Prater but quite far from the wheel pan.

The time available to us is short, we run a little, we arrive at the wheel, we make the scenic ride (really nice) and just get off, take our bags and go to the airport.
