2009 – Cornwall: King Arthur and Avalon

5 days exploring Cornwall from Bournemouth to Bristol along the coast, with a wonderful weather in February. Very nice trip.

Tuesday February 17th, 2009
We arrive in the afternoon at Bournemouth and aftern renting a car, we arrive at Durdle Door, a natural arch of rock on the seashore. The path starts at the top and goes down to the sea.

On the beach there are some children who are playing, even if the water is Cold. The arch is truly beautiful. At a short distance there is Lulworth, where there is another very pretty bay. It’s evening and now it is becoming dark. Then we head to Salisbury, we stop at the hotel and we go out for dinner. After dinner we walk a little in the center of the city.

It’s raining. We reach the cathedral and we visit it inside. It’s still early and nobody is around. We visit also the cloister.

We leave Salisbury and we head to Stonehenge. To be honest, we were expecting something different, less near the road, however the visit is interesting and seeing such a place moves us.

Now we head to Cornwall, we stop at Torquay for lunch and then we reach Plymouth. In the evening we reach Polperro, a fishing village, but unfortunately it’s late and the shops are already closed. We stop to sleep in Truro.

Thursday February 19th, 2009

Just wake up, we visit the cathedral. We leave the town, and we head to Pendennis, where there is a castle. Now it’s sunny and the castle near the sea is very beautiful.

We reach Lizard Point, one of the most famous Cornish point. The view is amazing. Then we reach Mount St. Michael, an abbey that stands on a promontory, but maybe it’s closed and therefore we don’t visit it. Next stop is Lands End, the western point of Cornwall, nice place, but the village is built like an attraction for tourists, but here the landscape is very beautiful.

Back and we stop in St. Ives, a village on the seashore, which overlooks two bays. Even here the sun shines and walking in the streets is very pleasant and the time goes quickly. In the evening we reach Bude where we stop for the night.

Friday February 20th, 2009
At a short distance from Bude lies Tintagel, where according to the legend, stood the castle of King Arthur.

Only remains of the castle are ruins, but it worths a visit. Other legendary place is Glastonbury, where there was Avalon. We visit the monastery and we have lunch in the center of the town.

Another remarkable abbey is located in Wells, a very beautiful face, a little less the interior. In the late afternoon we arrive at Bath, we can see a little with the light of sunset.

Saturday February 21st, 2009
It’s the last day of our trip. Immediately we visit the cathedral and the Roman baths. After visiting the spa, we take the car and we go, without stopping, to Bristol where we take the plane to return home.
