2014 – Serbia: Novi Sad and Belgrade

Trip to Belgrade, stopping in Novi Sad, and going around Serbia with floods around us.

Friday May 16th, 2014

As soon as we land we go to Novi Sad. There is a slight rain, but we walk around the streets in the center. It’s a pretty town but the center is small. The churches, inside, are very beautiful.

In the evening we go to Ilok, in Croatia, in a very characteristic restaurant. Then we see the ruins of the castle. We drive back to Novi Sad.

It rains a lot. We go up the hill of the castle, we take some photos, but it rains too much and we decide to go on, to Belgrade.
So we stop at Stara Pazova, where we see some flooded areas. Here we hear flood reports, but fortunately we can avoid those areas.

When we arrive in Belgrade, we walk through the central streets: the Knez Mihailova street, with the Delijska cesma fountain and numerous palaces until we reach the Kalemegdan Park and the castle. We go back to Trg Republike Square with its fountains.

Here we decide to divide: 2 of our friends (it will be our last trip with them) decide to go to see the graffiti while I with my other friend go to see the church Hram St. Michael’s Archangel and the Castle. We enter the main gate and take a full turn of the castle, going out from the opposite side and stopping to see the 2 churches that lie along the walls.
We go back and meet with our friends. In the evening we take some pictures to the illuminated city, especially to the castle and Skadarlija, a characteristic street.

We go to the square Trg Nikole Pasica, see the palaces Stari dvor and Dom Narodnog, we pass by church Crkva Svetog Marka and we arrive at church Hram Svetog Save, with its large dome.

The interior of the church is unfinished. We head back to the center again stopping at the presidential palaces, Novi dvor and Stari dvor. We cross the Studentski park, walk through the mosque and return to the castle to see it with our 2 friends.
Late in the afternoon we go to the island, we would like to see the confluence point between the two rivers, but we cannot because many volunteers are putting sandbags along the river for the fear of the flood, scheduled for the next day.

Last day of our journey, we walk without a precise target in the center, along streets that we have not seen yet and finally return to the airport.
